When Cecil Rhodes bought the manor in 1893 for 60,000 pounds it was in a state of neglect and in need of some R and R. English architect Herbert Baker was commissioned to enlarge the house and restore its original Cape Dutch appearance. The home's hybrid of ornate gables, colonnaded verandas, barley-sugar chimneys, whitewashed walls and warm teak woodwork ensure it's a residence fit for a King - or a President.
