Wynberg at a glance
WYNBERG
Located some 13 km south of Cape Town, Wynberg was an important stop on the route to Simon’s Town and an important strategic spot during the Napoleonic Wars at the turn of the 19th century. The Wynberg Military Base is the second oldest military establishment in South Africa.
The village of Wynberg grew up around the military base, and by the mid-19th century Wynberg was a popular holiday destination for British officials on leave and a sought-after location for the country villas of well-to-do Capetonians.
Residential growth continued after the suburban railway line was extended to Wynberg in 1864, and within a few years, the area was home to a number of excellent schools and churches of various denominations.
In the 1950s the village was ‘discovered’ by the artistic community. Artists and writers continue to find Wynberg, particularly the historic area across from Maynardville, attractive. Maynardville’s outdoor theatre is home to annual summer Shakespeare productions as well as ballet and music performances. This part of Wynberg boasts numerous restaurants, small boutiques and galleries.
The area’s rich architectural heritage of traditional Cape Vernacular thatched cottages and Cape Georgian and Victorian houses is Wynberg’s main draw card, along with easy access to the M3 highway to Cape Town’s CBD, and schools such as Springfield Convent, Wynberg Boys and Wynberg Girls High Schools.
The Constantia Wine Route, Constantia Village Shopping Centre and Cavendish Square are just a few minutes away.
