Rondebosch at a glance
RONDEBOSCH
With its central location, wealth of schools and wide range of properties, it is little wonder that Rondebosch is one of the most popular suburbs for families. Just 15 minutes from Cape Town International Airport and 10 minutes from the city centre, Rondebosch is home to a number of South Africa’s top schools, including Bishops, Rondebosch Boys’, Westerford and Rustenburg Girls’ as well as the University of Cape Town, whose main campus overlooks the suburb from its perch below Devil’s Peak.
Rondebosch is also home to the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and is literally a few minutes from Groote Schuur Hospital and the University of Cape Town’s Medical Faculty.
One of Cape Town’s oldest suburbs and still one of its most attractive, Rondebosch has at its heart a 40 hectare open space, Rondebosch Common. Popular with locals as a jogging and walking venue, and for activities as varied as kite flying and dog training, the Common is also home to hundreds of plant species and numerous bird species.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, most of what is today the suburb of Rondebosch was occupied by just a few farms, including Zorgvliet, Rustenburg, Westbrooke and Groote Schuur. Today this primarily residential suburb offers properties ranging from flats and townhouses to larger family homes.
