HISTORY
The recorded history of the area between Table Mountain and the Liesbeek River, including Newlands, begins in the mid 17th century, just a few years after Jan van Riebeeck established the first permanent settlement at the Cape to supply the ships of the Dutch East India Company. Land along the river was granted to a number of the first Dutch settlers who established farms to supply produce to the VOC. A few short years later, South Africa’s first brewery was established along the banks of the river. Today beer is still closely linked with the area; the SAB brewery is one of Newlands’s most recognised sights, and can easily be seen from the grounds of another Newlands landmark, Sahara Park Newlands Cricket Ground.
The suburb was given its name by Cape governor Willem van der Stel, who granted land 9 km south of Cape Town, which he named De Nieuweland, or Nieuwland, and where he built a residence. The gracious Vineyard Hotel, once the home of Lady Anne Barnard, is just one of the numerous historic buildings that dot the suburb. By the middle of the 19th century Newlands was considered one of the most desirable residential areas of Cape Town – a fact that has not changed over the past 200 years.
