Constantia at a glance
CONSTANTIA
Known internationally as the birthplace of the South African wine industry, Constantia is an area of rolling hills and gentle valleys about 15 km south of Cape Town’s city centre. Indeed, it was Simon van der Stel, Commander and Governor of the Cape from 1679 to 1699, who recognised the area’s potential and established Groot Constantia in 1685. By 1709 it is estimated that he had planted over 70 000 vines and the wines of Constantia had become famous throughout the world.
It was van der Stel, and others like him, who started the tradition of gracious country living and the production of fine wines for which Constantia is still justly famous. Today its winding lanes lead to gracious homes on spacious plots, as well as historic homesteads and cutting-edge wineries.
But while wine remains an important part of life in Constantia today, this lush green suburb offers much more, from horse riding, mountain bike and walking trails to elegant restaurants, spas and world-class shopping. There are also golf courses nearby for your pleasure, and the beaches of False Bay are just 15 minutes away.
With a wide range of properties on offer, from country estates and executive homes to townhouses and gated security estates, Constantia is an ideal suburb for anyone wanting to enjoy country living within easy reach of the city centre. For families, the area offers excellent schools, including the American International School and Reddam House. Other top schools, such as Western Province Prep, SACS, Bishops, Herschel and Rondebosch Boys, are within easy reach, as is the University of Cape Town.
