Bishopscourt at a glance
BISHOPSCOURT
With its rural ambience, well-kept avenues, large properties – most at least 4000 m2 – and spectacular views – as well as its proximity to both Cape Town’s many amenities and business districts – it is easy to see why Bishopscourt is recognised worldwide as one of Cape Town’s most desirable areas.
About 10 km from the city’s CBD, Bishopscourt is known for its beautifully landscaped, expansive properties and magnificent views. Many of its properties offer views across the Cape Flats and False Bay coast to the Hottentots Holland mountains, while others overlook Kirstenbosch, one of the great botanic gardens of the world.
Jan van Riebeeck established his farm, Boscheuwel (‘bush hill”) just a few years after arriving at the Cape in 1652. Boscheuwel changed hands numerous times, finally becoming the property of the Colonial Bishopric Fund in 1851. Renamed ‘Bishops Court’, it soon became the home of the first Anglican Bishop of Cape Town, and has been the official residence of the Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town ever since.
With easy access to the M3 highway, central Cape Town is just 15 minutes away. Many of Cape Town’s top schools –including SACS, Bishops, Rondebosch Boys’, Westerford and Herschel – and the University of Cape Town are within easy reach.
